Just upgraded to the latest version of Openfire and every time a new user is created in my Active Directory, they show up in the Openfire groups page with an asterisk next to their name stating:

That should disappear when they first login to openfire.  You are creating the User account in openfire via LDAP, when a non-LDAP account is created it is generally created via a client application directly on the chat server.  The openfire server is merely telling you it cannot communicate with the client correctly, which is probably true until they login for the first time.

My guess is that the user accoun has not fully synced to the openfire server yet.  Try clearing the Openfire caches.  And possibly restarting the server.
