Only small number of users can sign on

Hello,

We are trying to get an openfire server up and running, which we have, however we are having a problem with the total number of users being logged in.  For whatever reason, we can't seem to get more that about 900 concurrent users logged in.  System load is only at ~0.50, and the server seems to be very fast and responsive.  However, at about 900 users the web admin gets painfully slow, and no more users can login.  Quite frankly I'm too new to openfire and I don't know where to look or what to do...from a server standpoint all seems ok.

Does anyone have some thoughts?  The server specs are:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 Ghz Quad Core Processor, 8M Cache, 1066 Mhz FSB.

320GB SATAII Hard Drive, 7200 RPM, 8Mb Cache

4GB, 667Mhz DDR-2 Non-ECC Memory

Again, the load / processor usage / RAM usage are very good (CPU is at about 10% usage, RAM has about 2GB free).

Any help or advice would be great.

Thanks!

What OS on the server?

How much memory is openfire allotted?

Are you using LDAP, if yes what is the source of LDAP (AD, OpenLDAP, etc)?
