Here is the latest Spark version from SVN.
Known bugs between 2.6.0 Beta 2 and the latest SVN version:
SPARK-1059 Show a toast popup when "Alert when available" is selected
SPARK-1060 Spark should remember Preferences window (and others) position on the screen
SPARK-1061 Show new messages in systemtray option is not working
SPARK-1062 Improve flashing plugin options
SPARK-1068 Spark is not reacting to outside keyboard events when setting the auto Away status
SPARK-1069 Spark continuos flashing continues to flash after the chat window gets focus
Important to know: in the current SVN version user's profile path has been changed from \Username\Spark to \Username\Application Data\Spark (Windows XP) and \Username\AppData\Roaming\Spark (Windows Vista and 7). ~/.Spark/ ($HOME/.Spark) in Linux.

You have immediately found the weak spot of the community development. We are weak on Mac developers. There is a known issue for Mac, but neither cstux nor my dev team is able to fix it.
I am trying to install it on Vista SP1 but the installer wizard is giving me an error on the step to select the installation folder. Could not proceed any further! It works fine though on XP SP3.
I welcome the added settings for the taskbar flashing and group chats. However I still can't find a way to disable/suppress join and leave messages from group chats. Please let us know if there's a way.
Thank you.
Yeap, seems that IzPack installer cant create a folder in Program Files when UAC is enabled (same with Windows 7).
priviledged.jar worked well. Thanks. This version can also co-exist with 2.5.8 which is useful for me.
I would like to know if in this beta version there's a way to disable or suppress join/leave messages from the group chats.
There is no such option. I can only create a ticket for that
SPARK-1057.
We had the same requirement due to a Openfire extension we are running. I'll ask the programmer to create a patch for that and submit it to cstux.
I am having difficulties getting this version to launch on system startup (used the privileged jar).. could this have something to do with registry entries of previous spark versions?
would highly appreciate that Walter. when do you think the patch will be available please?
wroot is not a all-knowing person
i think cstux can comment on this better. So far i can only test with Windows 7 RC and i'm having problems launching Spark manually after a restart. Somehow javaw process is hanging and Spark is not showing up. Maybe i will try to install Vista later to test that.
cstux: It seems like I'm able to delete all comments on this page, intended?
Wroot: I'm also running Windows 7 RC, I'll try on a clean XP and post the results.
cstux didnt set the permissions. site admins has changed something, but they think that only contributors has all powers ![]()
So, start on system startup isnt working on Vista too, but at least there is no problems with launching Spark on Vista. With Windows 7 RC i'm only able to launch it after installing. After a restart the process is just hanging but GUI is not showing up.
Hey, great work, nice to see that someone cares about new Spark installers
But I dont get the diffence between the priviledged and non priviledged version.
And is there a list of installation parameters?
It seems that izpack offers an autoscript, but i dont get how set it as an parameter to the installer.
Best regards,
Maddi
Priviledged version is for the systems with limited rights default user (no admin rights). You cant normally install simple version to Program files on Vista with non-admin user, as simple version won't provide UAC privilege elevating dialog. Similar problems could be on linux system using sudo command.
Walter can you tell me when the patch for the option to suppress join/leave messages will be available please? I am eagerly waiting for it ...
i tried the installer on a vista 32 bit sp1 and i have some troubles with the trayicon. It is a bit too large so it is cut on the edges and it is not showing the actual status (away and so on) After first install i had zwo trayicons. one normal with status icon's and the bigger one without any status-changes. I uninstalled all previous versions and deleted all sparkfolders. after that i installed clean with your installer an now i only have the big trayicon.
The issue about not showing the actual status in the tray is fixed in 11044, but it's not uploaded here yet. Can you make a screenshot of this big systray icon?
Oh, you mean this cutting on the left. This is a long time and known issue and it's the same on the XP. Image itself (spark.jar/images/spark-16x16.png) looks better, though it seems that it has a cut on the left too, but it looks worse in the systray. I see that in you case it is also cut at the top, though it looks ok here on XP. Anyway, we have discussed this with cstux last week. He said he'll try to do something with that, so i hope he will be able to fix this.
the problem ist not the big icon but not showing the actual status in the systray or is the big icon interfering the other symbols?
As i said in my first reply the issue with 'no actual status' is already fixed in 11044 version. But it is not yet uplaoded.
i'm sorry for not reading properly
. thx for the fast reply. in the next days i am going to compile an actual cvs into a customized .msi if everything works...maybe i'll roll it out! or are there any bigger problems in this state?
No big problems. I actualy use svn version at home every day. Only the new features can be somewhat buggy, but usually cstux quickly fixes them.
i installed 11071 over an existing 2.6 beta2 on windows 7 rc and i have the same cutting of the icon like on my vista...but now the icon is showing the status...im now away even as typing this message right now ![]()
update...looks like spark only registers mouse movements and only when its persistent over a few seconds, keyboard typing is ignored, i don't think that the old version had this behaviour or is it windows 7 related?
Between the latest 2.6.0 Beta2 we have mad many changes.
So we have replaced all commercial code (closed source). Also the code that has check if you there or not. I will look what I can do.
Thanks for the update. In this version, however, i still don't find the option to suppress join/left messages in the group chats. Any idea when this could be available please? I don't thing it's a very difficult feature to implement. Will appreciate your feedback. Thanks.
pbezztell, if this is so easy to implement, then do it and share the patch
Joking. But seriously, we were waiting from Walter for the patch, to add this option. Maybe someone esle can implement this. Maybe cstux can, but he's already doing a lot.
tisso, cutting icon wasnt addressed in this update and i dont know when it will be addressed. As about the away issue, i havent noticed, but as i see cstux has already confirmed this issue, so we'll be waiting for an another update.
cstux, so far i have these issues filed:
SPARK-1059,
SPARK-1060,
SPARK-1061,
SPARK-1062 and maybe you can look into this
SPARK-1057 as it seems Walter isnt going to send us his patch. But this is a new feature and isnt mandatory for the next Beta release.
I have been incedibly busy with operational business of my company. I'll ask my developer to cut the auto joint patch out of our internal version and post it here. I'll let you know if it is forwarded to cstux.
Small patch for
SPARK-1057 has been attached to Jira. This has no preference to switch on or off. For our setup, we need alway an auto join due to an internal Openfire extension.
One more thing we have to discuss about the releases it's the installer bundled with JRE. I think most of the users will want this. Maybe cstux already can built them with JRE, just the files would be too large to attach here.
This installer works great on 64bit windows 7. The normal spark was giving errno=193, when i ran it. Thanks guys. The only proviso was I had to install it using the .jar version from an administrator command line as the .exe didn't work as it kept asking about association for the .jar's (which are currently unassociated). Perhaps the .exe can trigger java, rather than try and use the built in association which I'm sure many people will have pointed to other tools.
pbezztell, can you please reply? As it seems there is a bit of missunderstanding. Walter's patch is about suppressing the "User a wants you to join a group chat" dialog which is shown when you get an invite. I belive this is not what you have requested, so i have filed a new ticket for Walter's patch
SPARK-1071.
Does you request is about hiding the "user a has joined the room", "user b has leaved the room" messages in a group chat window? Then
SPARK-1057 is a correct ticket, but i'm afraid that we dont have a patch for this anymore.
First of all I would like to thank you for reconsidering my one-and-only requirement in Spark. Just to clarify my request is to have an option to suppress "<user a> joined the room" and "<user b> left the room" messages (shown in green) in the group chats.
In our company we use Spark all the time and we have a large number of group chats active at any one time since we operate multi-nationally. Everyday I get complaints from users because they see loads and loads of these annoying messages on their group chats.
It would be great if there is an option in the preferences to enable or disble these messages from appearing in the group chats. Isn't it possible? Thanks.
pbezztell, no, there is no such option currently. We thought Walter's patch could add this, but it seems his patch is adding something different. Now everything depends whether someone else give us a patch for this. Or maybe cstux will find a time to implement this, but he already has a huge list of tickets ![]()
Only with a commercial tool like InstallShield. I don't know about any MSI package generator that works well with our software distribution system (CA Unicenter) and we have tried a couple of open source installers.
pbezztell, priority won't change much without a patch. Also, i have set Minor priority because this is not a bug and there were not many requests about this feature. Actually so far it's only you requesting this.
Is it not possible to make an unattended installer with izPack ?
(This is why I asked for parameters several posts ago)
Yes, you can make a unattended installer.
spark-installer-11071.exe [unattended.xml] or
java -jar spark-installer-11071.jar [unattended.xml]
As I've deployed Spark 2.5.8 everywhere now, can anyone confirm if the .msi posted at the top stores users settings in the correct location (documents and settings\application data etc)?
Hi and greetings from Denmark
Great to see that spark still undergoing changes and development. Im about to deploy spark out for my 70 users and was wondering what version i should deploy. I have downloaded and tested both the 11093.msi and the 11071.exe
Both seems to work fine for my purpose (getting people on my domain online through sso and be able to chat and see user information like phonenumber etc via ldap) Are there any other things i should consider before deploying? the 11093.msi is the newest right?
One more question. In the future when a new final version is released, will the update funktion in 11093 work, så i dont have to install new versions on 70 machines
The only issue i have about spark is the memory consumation, but ill live :-) Is there anyway i could slim down the memory consumation in spark, maybe delete some plugins etc but would it help at all
Keep up the good work, i would love to help if i could
Actually the current SVN version is 11138, but cstux hasnt had a time to build and upload newest version here. With the new version you can face one problem. Spark profile path has been changed to /User/Application Data/Spark instead of /User/Spark. So after the upgrade you can see that Spark is starting without your settings. You will have to move your profiles. Current installers are not doing this automatically so far and probably it will take some time to implement this.
If Jive will upload the newest version on this site, then Spark should notice the new version and propose an upgrade, as it is programmed to check for the new version on this site.
I dont think you can slim down memory consumption drastically, but you can try tweaking some startup options: http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/docs/DOC-1153
lightning response hehe
well what you are saying is that i should wait for at least 11138, since the user profile path has moved. Then the settings would work even if the auto update has run and updated the program

Yeahh
cstux, if you ever come around denmark, ill bring out the babes. Happy to see 11156 :-) im pretty wasted right now but will test this new version in a jiffy.
wroot thx to you for keeping up the spirit here
Hm maybe i havent noticed it before but it seems that the 11156 version is opening 2 processes of spark. one using about 2 mb and the other about 60mb. Is there a good reason for this that i missed. This is not a complaint im just curious :-)
Update to 11186 :-)
- fixed misspelling in spellchecker
- Add Lithuanian Spelling option
- Add Fastpath plugin to a Spark build
damn cstux.
your working your arse off. good to see. Im sure something very good will happen to you soon :-) maybe a wet T shirt contest in your area
Unattended installation of 11186 using "java -jar spark-installer.jar unattended.xml" method works great!
Also, 11186 looks really good so far. I'll post more as I find issues.
I'm very intersted in helping test this new version on both Mac and PC. I don't see a Mac installer above, however, and the Java install completed but an exception is thrown when trying to launch it.
Any help would be appreciated!
Regards,
Daniel
I have troubles with predefined responses in that version - they aren't showing. I am also unable to define a new one
I see also following bug: in fastpath 'current chats' tab the question is always 'no question asked' regardless of the question user has
have filed this as
SPARK-1092. Doubt this will be fixed soon, if ever.
I see also following bug: in fastpath 'current chats' tab the question is always 'no question asked' regardless of the question user has
cant reproduce that. if i join the chat in one spark client and then check the current chats (1) in other Spark client i can see the question
Hi,
Any chance of a version of Spark for Solaris 10/OpenSolaris?
Happy to assist with testing in any way I can.
Dave
hi cstux, i've seen that you uploaded a new revision of the jar installer, anything special in the new release?
The new package contains all fixes since code revision 11186. For details take a look in the change listing of the SVN: http://www.igniterealtime.org/fisheye/changelog/svn-org/spark
Hello. Using the head (revision #11370 as of Friday November 6, 2009) out of the SVN, I created a .MSI file after some tinkering. Should I post the .MSI? Below are the questions / comments from my experience.
(M1) The icon that is placed on the Desktop is named "Spark.exe". I believe that this should be simply "Spark". This error occurs in the .aip file at (left nav) Project Definition > Files and Folders; (right pane) Desktop. Right-click on the name, select properties, and edit the name to "Spark". (http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/thread/40280)
(M2) Please place all files in SVN needed for .MSI build. For example, to create the .MSI installer, the JRE 6_0_14 files are not included, even though they are referenced in the /spark/build/installer/spark.aip file. Perhaps the JRE files could be placed under a new folder: "spark\build\win\jre". Oh, and then please update the "spark.aip.tmpl" to reflect the new location of the JRE files. (http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/thread/40277)
(M3) Could a README file be added that indicates that, in order to build an MSI, a 3rd party tool named Advanced Installer, available from http://www.advancedinstaller.com/ , is needed? Note, I believe that another 3rd party tool is needed to create the .EXE file.
(M4) What edition of 'Advanced Installer' is needed to simply build an .MSI using the "/spark/build/installer/spark.aip" file in SVN? (http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/thread/40279)
(M5) What edition of 'Advanced Installer' is needed to modify the .aip file in SVN? (http://www.igniterealtime.org/community/thread/40279)
Notes for M4 & M5: The "spark.aip" file is used by a tool named Advanced Installer; the web site for this tool is http://www.advancedinstaller.com/ At this time (November 6, 2009), version 7.2.1 of this tool has 4 different editions: Enterprise, Java, Professional, and Free; see http://www.advancedinstaller.com/feats-list.html.
cstux, i can't install deb package on Ubunto 9.10. It requires libstdc++5, but there is already 6th version installed.
Hi cstux,
I've run the .jar package above on an OpenSolaris snv_127 system (x64), and while Spark launches it is practically unsuable. Lemme know if I should open specific bug reports for this, otherwise if you or someone can suggest an easy way of getting Java error outputs and screen grabs to you happy to provide these.
In short:
- preferences window refuses to open
- messages sent to Contacts (recipients using Spark 2.5.8) are apparently sent in some form, but my beta client refuses to remove the message typed and sent from the text entry window, nor updates the conversation with the entered text
- replies from Contacts are blank (i.e. no idea what they are saying)
Cheers,
Dave
Almost 2 month later, Do you know if there is any "trick" to solve this bug?..I think that's reallly important!
I mean..about this:
***************************************************
wroot dice:
have filed this as
SPARK-1092. Doubt this will be fixed soon, if ever
Anyone can upload a compiled stable version .... to download either the msi or exe ... please, thanks.
For Windows XP and Vista.
dickinson, 2 months is nothing comparing to 2 years since the last stable official release
As i said, i doubt this will be fixed. There is only one man working on Spark (voluntarilly), but this issue is also related to Fastpath and Fastpath is not maintained at all. This is just too complicated. If you really depend on this so much, then search for another product maybe.
emuller, exe is already attached to this document.
I happen to have installed version 6.0 beta spark to the spark plug and sip phone behaves strange. For example the windows are "taken" and if you the above image is minimized. I appreciate your help.
wroot, i'm not going to search for another one 'cause spark is really great! I hope it's is gonna be solve (not soon I know now, jajajaj)
wroot...i'm using this tool as IT support, i'm thinking of create a message for clients (customers) when something is wrong (i.e. an HR app isnt working) before they start a chat. May I modify the registration form every time? Or try to create a pop up when they launch the Explorer?
What do you think? tnx from Locombia
dickinson, actually it seems that cstux has fixed this in the latest SVN commit (11420). At least he tried, as now Fastpath is not working in Spark at all
I think this will be fixed soon, maybe in 11421.
I told you...soon!..but the problem is that i have no idea how to use the files he published at http://www.igniterealtime.org/fisheye/changelog/svn-org/spark?cs=11420
You should help me
dickinson, in case you didnt notice, cstux has attached 11424 installer, which has your issue fixed. You a lucky, man ![]()
Hi all, I see the compiled .msi and .exe above, but where can I find the latest source code which includes these fixes? Currently I only know of http://svn.igniterealtime.org/svn/repos/spark/trunk/ and it's extremely out of date. Thanks in advance!
My mistake i'll give you the whole story this time. Has anyone attempted compiling the latest trunk src and running it on windows 7? When you open a message window it doesn't open at all. I tested on two machines, same problem although same installer worked fine on windows xp. I downloaded the latest compiled spark.exe from the site and it works fine on windows 7 which got me to thinking maybe the trunk src code is somehow the problem so I went under tags and compiled 2_5_8 and it works fine with 7. Issue must be with the latest trunk src; was someone already aware of this issue? I'm new on the forum so don't really know what to do with this information or if it is even relevant...
synchronous - you are right about compiled version issue on win7. As installer version is running fine, then probably some part of the compiled version cant run on win7 (UAC issue maybe?). Not sure whether i should file this as a bug or not.
cstux, can you build and attach installer prior adding jtabbedpane? I think new issues have arised after this change and i need a working installer of Spark (with chat windows opening and taskbar flashing). MSI will do also. Thanks.
What revision are you looking for? I can build the MSI, though I am waiting for some guidance if using the Advanced Installer (Free Edition) tool will still be the way to go.
That would be 11367, though i have already found 11362 installer. I'm still testing my issues. Profile wiping fixed them at home. But you can still build 11367, just in case.
As you requested, I built and uploaded the revision # 11367 of MSI Windows installer. I am still interested in the future plans for the use of the Advanced Installer (Free Edition) tool.
Thanks, Markus. I wonder, this Free Edition is showing that installer was created with version for evaluation. Doesnt sound nice. Maybe it will show different message after trial expires? Is there a way to downgrade it to free version right away? On site they say that one has to use Simple project to use only freeware features. Do you use Simple project to build Spark msi?

My SO,
Windows Xp Sp3
Java Runtime 6 Update 17
wroot, Hello. I have not spent much time with Advanced Installer, as I am awaiting direction on whether or not this tool will still be used, based on cstux's comment elsewhere that all commercial tools will be removed. Currently, the non-Free Edition of Advanced Installer is required to build the MSI, due to the features used in the configuration file available in Subversion. (I believe that the main feature is the creation of the spark.exe file, but I believe that Launch4J can be used to create the Spark.exe instead). I believe (75% guess) that the Free Edition can be used to create the MSI. My trial expires on December 13, 2009. I am assuming that the message/dialog that you mention will no longer show on MSIs built after that, but the problem is that I will not be able to use the existing Advanced Installer configuration file at that time. (I have asked the company behind Advanced Installer if the Free Edition of their tool can be used to build an MSI based on a configuration file created by a paid edition; see here. The answer is no; the Free Edition cannot build MSIs based on features in the commercial editions.)
Please note that the current MSI installer, and perhaps other Windows installation programs, does not delete the Windows registry entry to launch at startup, i.e. the entry for Spark under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run is not removed.
Yeah, it would be great if we could use Launch4J to create Spark.exe and build MSI with AI Free Edition.
I believe that I have created the ANT tasks and associated configuration files required to build the MSI files using the Free Edition from AdvancedInstaller (http://www.advancedinstaller.com/) to install Spark, both with and without an embedded JRE. How do I get someone to check it? Oh, the MSI installer does not have a Dialog Box popup mentioning a Trail Version.
To build the version with the JRE 1.6.0.14 bundled, all the files from “jre-6u14-windows-i586.exe” need to be available. Installed, this is about 88 MB in size which is probably a bit too much to place in Subversion. Alternatively, the JRE 1.6.0.14 installer can be included or linked to (http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/6u14/index.html), with specific instructions of where to install the JRE, so that the paths match up.
If a version of the JRE other than 1.6.0.14 needs to be bundled, the configuration files used by AdvancedInstaller, i.e. the *.aip files, need to be changed. This is because the configuration files have the name of all of the files to be installed, including the version specific file “/jre/bin/npjpi160_14.dll” file.
To somewhat organize the build files specific to Windows, as well as to the build tool, the following directory structure was created under “build”:
build/
windows/
advanced-installer/
spark-noJRE-template.aip
spark-withJRE-template.aip
jre/
launch4j/
launch4j-spark-template.xml
launch4j-starter-template.xml
So far i have tested this MSI on XP and Win7 32bit. It installs and Spark launches. Except that Spark has a bug on Win7 (not related to MSI) and chat windows cant be opened
That is i have tested the manual install with admin rights.
Have tested also the installation via AD Group Policy. Works. Instalaltion took ~20 seconds (P4, 1GB RAM, XP SP3).
After some system update (Debian testing/sid) I get following:

About Spark 2.6.0 beta 2 on ubuntu 9.10
Problems with tray icon, lib windows,... i have done this
Hello!
Is there anyone mighty enough to roll some new Spark versions based on the latest SVN trunk. There have been quite a few fixes recently. Thanks in advance!
Maybe cstux will attach a new build. Though the only fix i'm waiting now for is that chat window is not popping up on new messages for me (and for some other people).
I just tried to install the spark ".deb" in Ubuntu 9.10 and its asking for libstdc++5 however that dependency is phased out and uses libstdc++6. I don't know how to do this but I just wanted to let the team know about this. Thanks again, I'm a Jive-Freak
edit: oh this is already mentioned....sorry about that. I got the libstdc++5 from the debian repository and got it to work. :-)
Hi,
libstdc++5 is needed by jdic. Actually jdic is only needed for the webbrowser (Fastpath).
I will replace the native webbrowser with 100% java webbrowser.
i have compiled the latest svn with netbeans and i think since the last update of smack i can not login at the first attempt. the second login works. on the clientside the log tells me he gets no response from server. the server tells me Error Caused by: java.lang.Exception: Disallowed character... anybody similar problems?
Tried to install this on my mac, I get '/applications/spark/start no such file or directory'
